Avian influenza screening on wild birds in Sardinia

Due to the global migratory patterns of wild birds, birds infected with avian influenza will pass through Sardinia. We are screening the migratory birds of Sardinia to insight into the pathogenesis and evolution of global avian influenza. Furthermore, samples collected during this study will be useful in designing novel therapies for the treatment of human acquired avian influenza.

Sheep Pathology and Immunology

The Sardinia Research and Development team are investigating Ovine host immune response during mastitis infection caused by common bacterial agents. We are collecting blood samples from Sardinian sheep infected with Mastitis and Bluetongue. Therefore blood will be collected for RNA Isolation, Cell analysis and Genomic analysis.

Aging and Immunological Senescence of Sardinian People

Anti-aging discovery activities will utilize human studies in Sardinia to identify environmental and genetic factors that contribute to a healthy immune system in the elderly. Affected pathways will be used as targets for screening of molecules to generate a healthy immune system.

Diseases of Sardinian People

At SaRD, we are extracting genomic DNA from the dentine of ancient human teeth found in ancient Sardinian burial sites. Subsequent PCRs will be performed from the extracted genomic DNA to identify pathogens that may have infected ancient Sardinian people. Presently we are in the trial phase of extraction of DNA from two 5,000-year-old teeth.
